Vallisneria (eelgrass or tape grass) is a tall, ribbon-like plant that brings instant depth to a tank. It sends out runners, spreads into a meadow, and tolerates conditions that melt more delicate plants.
Light and CO₂
Low to high light all work; more light means lusher growth. It is one of the few tall plants that thrives even under modest lighting.
Substrate and planting
Plant the crowns in substrate with the crown just above the surface (burying it rots the plant). A nutrient substrate or root tabs help it run.

Care and trimming
Trim old outer leaves at the base and let runners spread. Once established it forms a dense background that shelters fish and absorbs nitrates.
Pro tip
Plant individual crowns spaced out; they multiply by runners, so a few soon become a full background without replanting.

Troubleshooting
Melting on arrival is normal — it often drops old leaves and grows new ones adapted to your tank. Keep crowns uncovered and be patient.

Anchor roots in the substrate or tie rhizomes to rock and wood — never bury a rhizome. Place taller varieties at the back and rosette or carpeting plants toward the front so every leaf gets light. Good placement reduces melt and algae competition.
